ESC101-Detailed Design of Portable Hair Dryer

Detailed design report’s task was to present physical representation of a proposed conceptual design using solid works to model engineering designs with different views to the prototypes and giving a sense of the dimension of the products. The detailed design our group had to develop was ‘portable hair dryer’. One of the challenges was that given the conceptual design and its requirements our group had to design the product while not pushing back against constraints. Nevertheless, given materials and constraints the product had to be made as efficient as possible. We did some research about given materials and some mechanism of for example, iron curler or typical hair dryers to get a sense of approaching more detailed problems.

One of the most interesting decisions evolved from modeling the handle as a flask with the vaccum layer in its exterior wall in order to keep heat inside the system and increase safety. We also looked at thermal conductivity of different materials such as aluminum and copper, their density and cost which are related to the criteria given in conceptual design. In order to pick products we made a weighted decision matrix.
The second part of the project was to present the final design to two TA’s and about 10 people in two groups who proposed the problem and the group that suggested the design to our team. These people were responsible to ask about the extent to which the objectives have been accomplished and considerations that might be neglected. This skill of presenting the requested designs are further improved by the subsequent design critiques and the showcase regarding the firefighters suit.
