ESC101 - Conceptual Design of Coin Sorter
The conceptual design project was about coming up with the design decisions that have not been made so far at least exactly same solution for the given problem. Our group was asked to develop three conceptual designs that meet the given requirements. Specifically, the requirement was to design a portable, convenient and efficient coin sorter with minimum possible human intervention.
We first started with doing some research regarding the coins sorters being made so far (reference designs) and their problems. We also looked at the standard size and the mass of the coins to have a sense of how to meet the dimension specified in the constraints section of the design brief. Next step was to draw rough sketches and brainstorming starting from a way to enter the coins, sort them efficiently, store as many as possible and quickly dispense the coins. The most important aspect we figured about this project was to propose a design that does not only meet given requirements but is also feasible.
Our priority was to propose conceptual designs that are not electrical but rather mechanical using force of gravity and spring constant “k” for example to sort the coins. The three design decisions were developed based on different priorities in order to compare them using weighted decision matrix and criteria. We also looked at the materials that are most effective with minimum cost.
